Bitiah Crochet Moses Basket Pattern

Updated: Mar 10

Level: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate

I love the traditional yet modern look of a Moses basket. Making the Moses basket is simple and fun and oh so rewarding. It's so enjoyable to see the surprise on everyone's face when they find out you made this. This is an heirloom that will be handed down for generations.

I have written this pattern with two different connecting stitches so that people of any skill level can make it.You can adjust the height by a few rows higher or lower to create a basket that fits your design.

NOTES OR

SPECIAL STITCHES

This pattern is written with a couple of different connecting stitch options. I have included instructions for both a standard invisible join and an advanced invisible join. The standard invisible join is noticeable from the back of the work, while the advanced invisible join is almost completely unnoticeable . Please reference the two blog posts within the pattern that shows detailed photo's of the two joining options. They seem a bit tricky but once you get use to them, it's very easy. The Bitiah basket uses the Waistcoat stitch, also known as the Knit stitch. I suggest using a smaller hook on the first round to pull the cord through the hole (I use 7mm or 8mm).

Pattern with Advanced Invisible Join

Beginning ~ Create a tail that is about 70" long (you will use this tail to weave into the advanced invisible join) Instructions on advanced invisible join are included in this blog post https://www.annieblustudio.com/post/advanced-invisible-join

Rd 1 ~ Attach cord to any hole on your base (Insert hook into this hole and pull up a loop) Ch 1. SC around base into each hole until you reach the beginning. ch 1. Connect with an advanced inv join. Make sure to roll the first rnd up towards the sky so that you begin to build each round upward.

Rd 2 ~ Continue round with WS in each st from previous rnd. Connect with advanced invisible join.

Rd 3 - Rd 13 ~ Repeat Rd 2

Rd 14 ~Mark with sm's where you want your handles to begin and end. WS around until you hit your first sm, make your handle as long as you would like (I prefer to ch 9 and skip 7 sts before placing my WS in the 8th sts) continue around until you reach the next sm and repeat the steps for the handle. then continue to end and connect with advanced inv join.

Rd 15 ~ WS around until you get to the chain. SC your desired number of stitches around the handle chain then continue with WS until you reach next handle chain, SC your desired number of stitches around the handle chain, continue with WS until you get to the end of the round. Join with advanced Inv Join and finish off ends.
